Why "Bumble Birds"?
A note from our founder:
Some of my fondest memories of my childhood were days spent exploring small towns and shopping with my mom and grandma. On shopping days, I'd be loaded up into the car to travel to a particular town in the Chicago suburbs - or sometimes, Southwest Michigan - where we'd we'd have lunch and visit gift shops, boutiques, and antique stores.
For my mom and grandma, it was a treasure hunt. They loved to find small gifts with meaning - an antique that flashed them back to their youth that they could proudly display on a bookshelf, a funny card for a girlfriend, a pair of handmade earrings.
We had so much fun - there was great joy in the hunt and in spending time together. I learned the importance of supporting small businesses and restaurants and shopping local. I also learned that a great gift is intentional - it's not about a material item, but about the meaning or experience behind it.
In 2012, my mom, who was an avid gardener, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Once the disease progressed and she could no longer garden, she would still go out into the backyard and look at the flowers and comment on how much she loved the bumble bees, or "bumble birds," as she would call them. If they were lucky, she'd even pet them!
By creating Bumble Birds Gift Co., I hoped to create a place that helps others find the perfect gift. I hope you find a little something at Bumble Birds that helps you spread love to those who make your life meaningful.
